Echo Backcountry

Waca Lake in Desolation Valley. This lake is typical of many small alpine lakes in the area and is home to Eastern brook trout (below) as well as rainbow, golden, and brown trout in certain other lakes in the region.

Golden-mantled ground squirrels are frequent visitors to favorite trailside lunch spots. The area has all the common small Sierra mammals like marmots, pikas, squirrels, and chipmunks. Coyotes are occasionally heard at night , and an occasional black bear encounter occurs at the lower elevations. Mule deer are common especially in the fall months.
